HKPDA supports BMA junior
doctors
We are writing to support the junior
doctors in England and the British Medical Association (BMA) in taking
industrial action against injustice, worker exploitation and any plans that
will endanger patient safety in the long run.
As part of the medical professions, we
share the same belief that extension of service to weekends should be
accompanied by an increase in investment, such as an increase in staff. Junior
doctors already work long hours. Certain features of the new contract would
inevitably force junior doctors to be even more isolated from their families
and friends. It is a mistake to put a spin on the schedule of doctors simply to
fulfil the pledge of a "seven-day working week in national health service
(NHS)". This indeed will jeopardize the health of doctors and safety of
patients. Needless to say, such changes have already resulted in great
resistance from the NHS workforce and the community.
We urge the UK government to take
actions to alleviate worries among UK doctors by lifting unilateral imposition
of the new contracts for junior doctors, and by returning to the negotiation
table. As a responsible government, it is crucial for the Health Secretary of
the UK government to solve this impasse through dialogue and understanding, but
not by public pressure or brute
force. After all, we belong to a profession that respects and connects humans.
We hope that the BMA shall prevail in preserving the rights of UK doctors, so
that they may perform their best at work for the care of their patients, in a
sustainable manner.
Yours sincerely,
Hong Kong
Public Doctors’ Association (HKPDA)
